Treasure Hunts are limited Hot Wheels cars that Mattel mixes into the regular mainline assortment. They look a lot like ordinary cars on the peg, so knowing what to check is half the fun.
A quick history
- 1995: the Treasure Hunt series launched, with Spectraflame paint and rubber tires.
- 2007: the line split into regular Treasure Hunts (TH) and the rarer Super Treasure Hunts (STH), which kept Spectraflame paint and Real Riders rubber tires.
- 2013 onward: regular THs carry a circle-and-flame logo on the car; STHs carry a stylized "TH".
- Mid-2010s: a circle-flame symbol was added to the card behind the car: silver for TH, gold for STH. Sources differ slightly on the exact year (2015 vs. 2016).

The four checks for a Super Treasure Hunt
| Check | Super Treasure Hunt | Regular Treasure Hunt |
|---|---|---|
| Paint | Glossy, metallic Spectraflame | Ordinary paint |
| Wheels | Real Riders rubber tires | Plastic wheels |
| Mark on car | "TH" graphic | Circle-flame logo |
| Card | Gold circle-flame behind the car | Silver circle-flame behind the car |
No single clue is proof on its own. Check all four together.
Avoiding fakes and tampered cars
Because STHs carry a premium, some sellers swap rubber wheels onto ordinary cars, repaint castings, or reseal cars into different cards. When buying online, ask for close photos of the base, the wheels and the card edges, and compare against a trusted picture of that specific release. Walk away from anyone who won't provide them.
Hunting tips
- Learn the year's list of TH/STH castings so you know what you're looking for.
- Scan for Spectraflame shine first; it catches the eye.
- Be courteous at the pegs and leave displays tidy.
